Metal Tag Embossing and Verification Solution for Automotive Manufacturer

April 19, 2011

The Need:

Chrysler Toledo South Plant, located in the Toledo Ohio area, was in search of a solution to produce VIN tags and be able to verify the accuracy of data on the tags.  They required a solution that would safe-guard against duplicates, ensure that the data embossed on the tag matched a corresponding data record, and the final product was clear and legible.

Embossed VIN tag

Automotive manufacturing plants have gradually migrated to automated processes over the years mainly to avoid human error and to ensure accuracy, however, finding a solution that is 100% error-free has been an ongoing challenge.  The common industry term “error-proofing” translates to: completing one step in an extensive process, taking an actual photograph of that step, and validating the result against a determined standard to ensure accuracy before proceeding to the next step.

The Solution:

Metal Tag and Plate Embosser with Vision Technology

CIM USA, Inc. engineered a solution for Chrysler to fulfill their need for an error-proofing system to produce VIN tags with their metal embossing machine with built-in visual inspection and verification system (ME2000 VS).  This advanced metal plate embossing machine provides a means for taking a photograph of each individual tag after it has been embossed, and comparing it against a data record.  If the system detects an error, a message is generated and the machine stops to allow the operator time to address the problem.

Chrysler was more than satisfied with the outcome.  They were able to communicate their need to CIM, who in turn engineered a quality solution to meet their needs.  Chrysler Toledo South Plant is the original Jeep CJ assembly factory – this location, as well as all of Chrysler’s manufacturing plants are dedicated to achieving 100% accuracy at their plants to produce top quality products.

CIM USA, Inc. thrives on their ability to successfully engineer solutions for the various segments of the manufacturing industry.  For further information about CIM USA and their part marking and traceability solutions, please visit their website at
